Teacher Spotlight: Melissa – Piano Teacher in Melissa, TX

We are excited to introduce Melissa! She offers in-home piano lessons in Melissa, TX, as well as surrounding areas.

Melissa began her musical journey at the age of 4, having begged her parents to allow her to take piano lessons. She quickly moved from a table-top keyboard to an upright piano after it was discovered that her interest wasn’t just a fleeting childhood phase. She studied all through high school, winning several awards and scholarships and began studying with Dr. Robert Mayerovitch at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. She decided to stay there for her undergraduate studies and graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Following graduation, she began teaching privately in earnest, as well as diving into other musical endeavors—general music teacher for a private school, musical director for theater productions and private lessons. In 2006, she received an opportunity to join the collaborative artist staff at her alma mater and worked there for seven years. In addition to one-on-one collaboration with students and faculty, she was able to accompany two of the opera workshop classes. As a result of this work, in 2009, she received the opportunity to travel to Urbania, Italy, where she served as the primary accompanist for Musica della Marche.

During this time, she also participated in liturgical music ministries through the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland—serving as the musical director for the Newman Campus Catholic organization on the Baldwin Wallace campus, the music minister for the school Masses at Sts. Joseph and John Interparochial School and the Assistant Music Director for St. Joseph Church in Strongsville, Ohio. Because she believes that variety is the spice of life, during this time she also worked as the sole choral pianist for all ensembles at Midview Junior and High School in Grafton, Ohio.

She has had the privilege of serving as music director for musicals including “Guys and Dolls,” “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” “Suessical the Musical,” “The Addams Family Musical,” and “Into the Woods.”

Each of her musical roles have further cemented her belief in the importance of music education in all lives—young and young at heart! Of all the positions she has held over the years, her favorite has been opportunities where she was able to work one-on-one with students. Melissa believes in meeting each student where they are, and then nurturing a love of music in them. Each lesson is individually tailored to what the student’s goals are for their unique musical journey. She aims to treat each student with kindness and warmth—and tries to have some fun in the process! Having a love of playing duets with her students, Melissa is often found on the bench next to them, playing alongside!

Melissa is experienced at teaching: Beginner, Intermediate, Classical, Chords, Musical theater, Pop, Hymns/Church music, Collaborative piano skills, Music Theory, Music History.

Organized, thoughtful, and encouraging. When her students struggle, she has fantastic ways of breaking down what they are learning so that it makes sense. Every student I have seen her work with has always felt supported by her even if they did not feel confident in their abilities. She is also hilarious, which creates a comfortable environment for everyone as she makes learning fun. Finally, she takes the time to understand what her students need, which is arguably her best strength as a teacher.
