What others are saying about Daria:

Ms. Chung is extremely dedicated to the concept of education. She feels a strong sense of responsibility to the students in her classes and she takes their success very personally. She is also exceedingly patient with all students, encourages them and coaxes the very best effort from each and every one. And I think this is the reason that her students love her so much and made such a huge improvement on making their music in such a short period of time. Ms. Chung is clearly one of the best faculty I have worked with in the last 19 years.

Daria is an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher. She would lead the students patiently step by step to help them make the right sound needed for the piece. She is willing to repeat as many times as possible until the students finally understand the idea. I have seen many students be amazed at the sound they were able to produce after her coaching.

Daria is a very sincere and caring person. She is able to understand and relate to many different people with various environments which must be the reason she was able to successfully teach various students and work in different environments. Also, she has given many performances for charity for the people in need for help.

Teacher Spotlight: Lenia – Flute, Voice, and Piano Teacher in Denton, TX

Lenia, a native from Havana, Cuba, has excelled throughout her musical career as much as a flutist in the classical genre as she has ventured into the jazz world. At the age of fifteen years old, she participated as a soloist with the symphony orchestra of the Conservatory Guillermo Tomas, Cuba in the second festival of symphony orchestras in Cuba. Her professional journey as a flutist started when she joined the jazz band of the famous cabaret “Tropicana” in Cuba, accompanying the show for 4 years while also serving as an alternate flutist in the National Band of Cuba. During this time, she made several international trips abroad as a jazz flute player and vocalist with different ensembles which allowed her to gain experience in performing a wide repertoire of traditional Cuban music, Latin jazz, and standard jazz. Ms. Bolano obtained her most recent contract as flutist and vocalist in 2010 in the United Arab Emirates for 2 years, after which she decided to move definitively to the United States to continue her studies in music.

In 2016 Lenia was one of the winners for the Austin Flute Society Masterclass Competition. In 2017, she was the principal flute of the Mississippi Intercollegiate Band (Honor Band event), and a guest artist at the Louisiana Flute Festival teaching a jazz class entitled “Thinking Outside the Box”. Also, the same year she was selected as an alternate for the NFA Jazz Flute Masterclass and one of the winners of the NFA Flute Choir Competition.

She was the principal flutist of the 41st Army Band in Mississippi when Lenia performed exclusively with the Jazz Combo of the unit which was given the highest possible certification by Army Music Officers. CW2 Casey Kirk, Chief of Command of the unit quoted “Due to her incredible musical ability, they were selected to perform at the 2018 Army Music Leaders Conference”. Lenia has also been awarded the coin of recognition of the Army Band Excellence of the Army National Guard.

Her interests in composition have led to two of her most recent works being premiered at the University of Southern Mississippi; “Nostalgia” for flute choir and “Trio for Two Friends”. Besides, “Trio for Two Friends” was accepted to be a performance by the Music by Women Festival which was performed in March 2018.

Lenia graduated from the Conservatory of Cuba “Guillermo Tomas” with honors.  In 2012, she was awarded a generous scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi where she culminated with honors her bachelor studies in music performance with Dr. Mezzadri. At USM, she earned the opportunity to perform in masterclasses with flutists like Richard Sherman, Jim Walker, Raffaele Trevisani, and others. She is currently doing her master’s degree in Music Performance at the University of North Texas, and she remains as a teacher of flute, piano and voice lessons.

Here is what others are saying about Lenia:

I would characterize Lenia’s teaching style as passionate and energetic. She has a way of reaching all students despite what instrument they play. Lenia has a strong knowledge of the history of the music, styles, and techniques… Knowing these things are great when trying to explain music/rhythm to students, its origin, and ways to play it using a different style/technique.

Music Educator, 41st Army Band

I would recommend Lenia to anyone. She is a wonderful person. Lenia works very well with others and has a very agreeable and nice manner about her. Lenia is an amazing musician – really not any weak points. Any student would be greatly enhanced by her teaching. She is very good about being places on time and an effective communicator with all. She has a willing attitude to do any task that is asked of her.

Commander of the 41st Army Band

Beginning in 2007 Lenia has gained extensive teaching experience, working with students of all ages on the flute, piano, as well as vocal. If you have the privelege of working with Lenia, you will not regret your choice!

Learn How to Play Piano

Why is it helpful and beneficial for any aspiring musician to learn how to play the piano?

kidFor the beginner, the piano is a perfect instrument for so many reasons. For one, the piano is one of the easiest instruments to quickly gain success. Piano students do not need to focus on breath support as is the case with wind instruments. Guitar students need advanced dexterity and must push past the pain and develop callouses on their fingers in order to play comfortably. Not so with the piano. String students must struggle for weeks or months to train their ears to coordinate with their fingers. In contrast, the piano has specific keys. A student doesn’t need a trained ear to learn to hit the right notes to play music. And unlike drummers, those learning the piano learn so much more than simply rhythm.

A student who wishes to learn to play the piano is able to face the piano keys while learning to play. Many instruments require the fingers to be down, facing the audience,  which is more difficult to master. A well-trained pianist will be able to play without looking at the keys, but the beginner is able to gain more immediate success by being able to see the keys they need to play.

Visually the piano is laid out in such a way to make musical concepts and theory straight-forward and much easier to understand. Many musical concepts such as scales, chords, half and whole steps, are very abstract and difficult to explain on many instruments. Concepts such as these are easy to demonstrate and for the beginner to visualize on a piano.

For these reasons those who desire to join most high school and university music programs will be required to first learn how to play the piano before they are able to continue with other musical instruments. In addition to what has been previously mentioned, playing the piano involves the use of both the treble clef and the base clef. Those who wish to compose music will find great benefit in being able to create music on the piano so they can hear all the parts together instead of waiting for each individual instrument to come together in order to hear their musical creation.

We are not saying that playing the piano is a superior skill to playing other instruments, it simply lays a wonderful foundation to enhance any musician’s skills. First learning how to play the piano enable a smooth and easy transition to any instrument. For this reason, if you are looking to ignite a life-long love of music, learning to play the piano is a fantastic place to start.
